How to identify a coin from a photo

Place the coin on a plain background, photograph the obverse (heads) and usually the reverse (tails), crop to the rim, then read country, denomination, year, and mint mark. A KM catalogue number is the usual world-coin reference when the type can be matched.

The problem

Coins are small, reflective, and often worn. One blurry snapshot of a silver disc is not enough to separate similar types. Identification needs a sharp, face-on photo of the design — and often both sides, because mint marks and dates live in different places by country.

Step-by-step

1. Switch to coin mode if your tool offers note vs coin. Mixed modes waste a capture on the wrong object class.
2. Use a matte background. White paper or a dark cloth works. Avoid glossy tables that mirror the ceiling.
3. Hold the phone parallel to the coin. Fill the frame with the rim. Soft side light beats flash on metal.
4. Capture the other face. Year, mint mark, and denomination often sit on opposite sides.
5. Crop tightly so fingers, a holder, or a pile of other coins are gone.

• If the surface is mirror-like, tilt the light, not the coin, so legends stay in focus.
• Worn coins still identify if the main device (portrait, arms, denomination) is visible.
• Tokens, medals, and replicas are often refused or returned with low confidence — that is expected.
